Who are we?
Simon Vann Jones (a printer) and Sean Heighton (a Fire-Fighter of 2 years based at Brislington). Between us we have run marathons in the arctic circle, jumped off the world’s highest bridge, climbed the highest sand dune, travelled throughout South Africa, Asia, Australasia and The Americas – to name but a few!
What are we doing?
We are delivering a much needed 4x4 Land Rover to The Gambia Fire and Ambulance Service. The vehicle was donated to GAFSIP by SerCo and Airbus to enable us to take part in the “Plymouth/Dakar/Banjul challenge”. We will be leaving Bristol on Boxing Day this year and should arrive in Banjul, The Gambia around 3 weeks later. The 3700 mile trip will take us across Europe, through Morocco and into the Sahara Desert, eventually travelling through Senegal to The Gambia. We have kitted out “The Landy” as we have named her, with very basic sleeping accommodation which will be less than comfortable!!
Why are we doing this? (Good question!)
Both of us have this mad, unfulfilled sense of adventure (It seemed like a good idea at the time). We are raising money for our chosen charity GAFSIP (Gambia and Avon Fire Services In Partnership). GAFSIP is a charitable trust which makes a real difference in The Gambia by sending redundant fire and rescue, health and educational equipment and securing training programmes and equipping schools. The key objectives are sustainable self sufficiency. (Most of the goods sent would have been scrapped or land-filled here in the UK)
A new dimension in recycling which benefits so many people.
The Local Authorities which donate these goods cannot contribute to the shipping costs. This is where GAFSIP comes in. It raises funds purely to cover shipping costs – there are no administration costs and all time and work is given voluntarily. This unique partnership is celebrating 15 life changing years, this year.

There are a number of ways that you can sponsor us.
- A cheque payable to GAFSIP (RALLY) (Please put your address on the back for a receipt)
- Sponsor us per mile or just a total amount.
- Hold a fund raising event which we will come along to with “The Landy” and a fire engine.
