Who are we?

Brad & Lisz Hardwidge. Brad first joined Avon Fire & Rescue Service in 1988 as a retained fire-fighter at Blagdon, and joined as a whole time fire-fighter in 1992.

Brad & Lisz have been married for almost 8 years and their anniversary will be on September 16th whilst they are on the drive. Lisz came to England from Canada in 1998 for what she thought was going to be a short stay.  They got married in Canada in 2000. They live in Portishead with their 2 children Molly aged 2 and Harry who was born on 30th March this year.

What are we doing?

We are preparing to embark on a 4000 kilometer charity drive in 7 days around Europe.  The journey will be taking them through 10 countries in total and all proceeds will be going to GAFSIP

Brad has been involved in Land Rovers for many years and spends his spare time restoring and rebuilding them. As well as having to complete the daily challenges that are part of the Landy Rally,  he will be providing back up support for the rest of the vehicles.
As there has been a lot of bad press regarding the green issues surrounding 4x4's in general, they are planning to make the drive solely on Bio Diesel that he makes from used cooking oil. Brad & Lisz are also hoping to raise money for GAFSIP by selling advertising space on their Land Rover.

Why are we doing this? (Good question!)

Both of us have this mad, unfulfilled sense of adventure (It seemed like a good idea at the time). We are raising money for our chosen charity GAFSIP (Gambia and Avon Fire Services In Partnership). GAFSIP is a charitable trust which makes a real difference in The Gambia by sending redundant fire and rescue, health and educational equipment and securing training programmes and equipping schools. The key objectives are sustainable self sufficiency. (Most of the goods sent would have been scrapped or land-filled here in the UK).

A new dimension in recycling which benefits so many people.

The Local Authorities which donate these goods cannot contribute to the shipping costs. This is where GAFSIP comes in. It raises funds purely to cover shipping costs – there are no administration costs and all time and work is given voluntarily. This unique partnership is celebrating 15 life changing years, this year.
